Since media has a huge influence in civilization in both good way and bad way. In this study, the researcher examines the practice of racism in a British TV series Mind Your Language. That is why the practice of racism is prohibited, since it can cause conflict, not only between individual, it could cause a conflict between nations, even worldwide. Since there is a victim who is being disadvantaged, racism can cause a conflict between the accuser and the victim. It means that the judgmental statement in racism could be real or not. It means that it is not only something tangible that can be source of racism, the intangible things like prejudice and different ideology could cause the practice of racism.Īccording to Memmi (1992 in Reisigl & Wodak, 2001), racism is the generalization of the real or fictitious differences that is benefits for the accuser and detrimental to the victim. The social subsystem deals with dominant groups, organizations, individuals and so forth, while the cognitive subsystem deals with prejudice and ideology. It is like what van Djik (1999) said in a different kind of explanation, that the systems of racism consist of two subsystem, social and cognitive. There are so many things deal with racism, they are genetic, cultural, biological, institutional, ideology and so forth. According to Reisigl and Wodak (2001), the concept of racism has become expanded and evasive. Racism is not only dealing with race, biological and the skin color. This topic interesting to be examined, because it happens in our daily life, since Indonesia is a multicultural country where there are many ethnics with different social and cultural background live together in the society. The culturally diverse characters who play in this TV series and the historical-political background of their countries show the cultural differences and at the same time caused the issue of racism, since the characters come from various countries (Pakistan, India, Japan, China etc.). This study aims to see the motive and the discursive strategies used by the characters of a TV series Mind Your Language. The series portrayed students with varying degrees of English proficiency and played on the humour, that students misunderstood English words and misinterpreted situations in the classroom.
